Crew has made significant efforts to reduce methane venting from our remote producing assets in the Lloydminster area by utilizing excess gas volumes that are uneconomic to transport to gas processing facilities. Taking advantage of Crew’s ingenuity, an innovative solution was presented to effectively utilize the energy potential of this stranded gas and reduce venting.

Cryptocurrency mining – a process of computing complex calculations to yield cryptocurrency – turned out to be the answer. With the installation of 11 cryptocurrency mining data centers as well as 3 combustors at remote sites, Crew found the solution.

Cryptocurrency Mining Benefits:

  • The 11 data centers currently operated by Crew equate to over 26,000 tCO2e saved each year, which is equivalent to taking over 5,600 cars off the road in Canada.

Combustion Benefits:

  • From the combustors alone, Crew has been able to realize reductions of approximately 14,500 tCO2e annually, while also seeing production increases due to no longer being restricted by venting volumes.

Combined Benefits:

  • From both cryptocurrency mining and combustors, Crew was able to achieve reductions of over 40,000 tCO2e on these remote sites, while also seeing production increases due to no longer being restricted by venting volumes.

Without these initiatives, Crew would be required to reduce production from the wells (to lower vent gas rates to stay within compliance) or shut the well(s) in completely. Crew was able to keep 300 bbl/d of heavy oil production online with these initiatives.
